New Power Source for Computers.

DSP Design has developed a new computer that is powered without the need of a wall socket. Instead the new machine gets its power via a network cable, a source that was previously only capable of supplying power to equipment such as CCTV and wireless access points.

The Poet 6000 is the first machine to use Power-over-Ethernet (PoE), created by DSP Design the machine is able to function as when data is sent down a network cable it is converted to voltages. Although this process only produces 15.4 watts of power (much to low for usual laptops) the Poet 6000 needs only 12 watts to operate due to its implementation of low power components and a flat-panel screen.

The new method is excellent news for environs such as exhibition halls as it ensures that the laying of cables will not be needed.

Ordinary laptops may also be utilising this technology soon, as work is underway on Power Over Ethernet Plus, which can generate 30-35 watts of power. As the cables and connectors needed to use PoE are universal, it could soon be a system that is used worldwide.
